A Golden Fidget Spinner Could Be the Perfect Stocking Stuffer For Someone on Your List
With the holidays approaching, a golden fidget spinner could be the perfect stocking stuffer for someone on your list.golden fidget spinner But if you’re shopping for kids, be sure to check the toy’s age label and watch out for small parts that can pose a choking risk.
The spinner craze has grown quickly into a worldwide obsession, with a reported 1.golden fidget spinner 1 billion of the devices sold last year and hundreds of companies jumping in to cash in on the trend. But some experts aren’t happy about it, with one calling it a “distraction” and another claiming that the spinners can cause anxiety and lead to social problems.
For parents, the toy’s popularity has also raised concerns about its safety, with the Consumer Product Safety Commission urging parents to keep an eye on kids and warning that the small toys can be a choking hazard. The CPSC says children under 3 should not play with the spinners, and those aged 3 to 6 should only use them under adult supervision.
Many schools have taken steps to curb the toy’s rise, with some banning them from classrooms and others requiring kids to leave their spinners at home. But a number of occupational therapists aren’t on board with the bans, with some even recommending them as a way to help kids concentrate.
“We recommend using fidget toys as a part of a larger behavioral plan to address fidgeting and other distracting behaviors, rather than trying to eliminate them completely,” said Claire Heffron, an occupational therapist who runs a pediatric therapy practice in Cleveland, Ohio. “They can be a useful tool when used appropriately.”
As for the claims that the gadgets help people with ADHD and anxiety, those are unfounded, researchers say. “It is not possible to reduce symptoms of ADD/ADHD with the use of a single device,” said a clinical psychologist at the University of Central Florida. “It is more likely that fidgeting and distraction are symptoms of a disorder, not the cause.”
The spinners’ popularity is also creating a new class of entrepreneurs — the so-called teen millionaires. For example, 17-year-old high schoolers Weiss and Maman started a business called Fidget 360 after convincing their physics teacher to let them print a few spinners on the school’s 3-D printer, earning them a few thousand dollars before they were banned from selling them at school. Now, the pair has more than 160,000 Instagram followers and five employees, plus a manufacturing facility in New York City. They’re even working on a premium version of their fidget spinner, the Torqbar, which comes with a case and is made from gold-plated brass and ceramic. The deluxe version will cost you a bit more, of course. But for now, you can get the standard model for less than $30.
